It's a very valid question, and one that I think the game designers intended to leave open.Personally, I find the most compelling argument is that he had a change of heart or a moral breakdown somewhere along the way, and he realizes the enormity of what he's done. He knows he has to die in order for the war to finally wind down. And because you're the only mercenary brutal and effective enough to keep pace with him (now that all the mercenary and faction leaders are dead), you must die too.Food for thought, at any rate.

The important answer is it doesn't really matter.Beyond the unfortunately shallow and underdelivered plot of Far Cry 2 there is a dark and wise philosophy that not many games dare touch: the horrors of civil war and the absence of good and bad sides in it.While not directly pointing at things like torture, civillian massacre and other byproducts of war, Jackal says things that people either involved in or closely affected by civil war eventually come to. Namely, that both sides are being fooled into killing each other and there is no 'happily ever after' once one overwhelms the other - which is directly shown by the transition between the two zones and the events unfolding with it.Oh and the obvious fact that people are nothing but meat for the grinder for those pulling the strings, the true work is done by mercenary sabotage and circles around money.Good or bad, Jackal is simply an observer. Truth is the sides would have gotten their access to weapons with or without him.
Well, IMO the Jackal is the only sane and thinking person amongst all other characters. I have never heard the rumors about his cancer or smth, but the guy has his view of the world and, although most of it was derived from Nietzsche, I can still support the guy. I mean, almost any other person you meet in the game (other than Father Maliya) is a total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ minding his/her own interests (including Rueben.
Just listen to Jackal's tape 5-04-Home). What I want to say is that J is just another businessman facing certain choices.
He does not start wars, he just helps people kill other people. Helps them do what they do best. I'd say, he's a goodie and a hero.
