I play a lot of lux support, like I have over 1000 games on it. During ardent meta I fell in love with nomad's medallion and all the extra gold generation it gave, however after some nerfs and the removal of its passive quest thing its gold generation, while still better then frost fang, seems to fall off after some time, but every time I take spell thief's I seem to regret it 100% of the time because of its worse gold generation/forcing you to poke. Why do people use spell thiefs? Why isnt it worse? I'm just kinda confused rn. This comment^Also, Pyke likes ancient coin sometimes for the CDR and mana. Same for taric in bad matchups where you just need the mana for heals and shields.For everyone else (nonmelee), basically ask yourself: Can I reasonably poke these people often enough to get off my spellthiefs procs?
If yes, spellthiefs. If no, coin.Alternatively, if you can poke them hard but have lowish kill potential pre 6 (think you’re Ashe/karma/soraka/nami vs cait/janna/kench), you can take coin just for the mana regen to keep them shoved under tower so they potentially miss CS.
